You, you are a snare; your love is a prison. The truth hurts—its violence is rich and sweet. When an American leaves their familiar land to travel to tropical places, one bite of a good ‘YAM’ is worth 1,000 Quarter Pounders.”

2024

  1. 2024.12.31 T – Jeff Parker: The Way Out of Easy (Nov 2024) — Well holy hell. Not bad to end the year on.
  2. 2024.12.28 S – Prince: The Black Album (1994) — “Days before its intended November 1987 release, Prince contacted Warner Bros. chairman Mo Ostin and requested the album’s withdrawal. Prince attributed his decision to a “spiritual epiphany” that convinced him the record represented the “anger” and “licentiousness” that the singer had to leave behind. He later blamed the album on an entity named Spooky Electric, described as a demonic, low-voiced alter-ego induced by Camille. The withdrawal decision is rumored to have been influenced by Prince’s having a bad experience on MDMA. The record company had to destroy about 500,000 copies of the album which were already on loading docks, ready for shipment to stores. However, a small number of those copies escaped destruction, which made the album available on the bootleg market following its cancellation. Prince would later reference the withdrawal in the music video for the lead single from Lovesexy, “Alphabet St.”, where a message quickly scrolls down the screen that reads: “Don’t buy The Black Album, I’m sorry.””

  9. 2024.12.18 W – Bach: Mass in B minor, BWV 232 | Karl Richter — For other interviews, I have listened again to that record recently. That was completely different, and it is not acceptable at all for my ears. Karl Richter must have been a really wonderful musician. Also, he played the harpsichord by himself and conducted, for example, St. Matthew’s Passion without seeing any scores. That’s a really amazing thing. Anyway, that’s his way of music making, completely modern. Not only modern, but the machine-like notes by notes [mimics sound] and so on. That is really not acceptable anymore, but at that time, that made, probably, a lot of excitement for the audience, and this is very nice, I think.

  71. 2024.08.05 M – Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um (1959) — “The title is a corruption of an imaginary Latin declension. It is common for Latin students to memorize Latin adjectives by first saying the masculine nominative (usually ending in “-us”), then the feminine nominative (“-a”), and finally the neuter nominative singular (“-um”)—implying a transformation of his name, Mingus, Minga, Mingum.
  72. 2024.07.31 W – Bill Callahan: Resuscitate! Captures a show at Chicago’s Thalia Hall from Monday, March 6, 2023: “This is a live album that was taken from the tour for YTILAER. Songs tend to mutate after they’ve been recorded. These songs were mutating faster than usual. Like whatever happened to Bruce Banner in the lab—I knew these songs were about to get superpowers. As far as I was concerned, this change needed to be documented. The best thing about documenting something is that it gives the creator permission to move on should they wish to move on. I usually prefer to move on. These songs were recorded in Chicago, America’s heart. And at one of the best clubs in the country—I try to only work with venues that are not entangled with Live Nation/Ticketmaster. Thalia Hall, baby. Stay free.
  73. 2024.07.20 S – Mac Demarco, Salad Days (2012/2024): Man, love this album. Feel like I tell this story all the time but remember being outside Mbale, Uganda with a group of EDM people heading up into mountains to a resort as sun set and I got shotgun with van driver who gave me aux. Through this on and he looked over at me and said, “this is goooooood music.”
  74. 2024.07.18 R – Brian Eno and John Cale, Wrong Way Up (1990): Spinning Away. Omg.

  76. 2024.07.18 R – Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery: Jimmy & Wes: The Dynamic Duo (1966): Recommendation of David B. “Both musicians are prominent in the Hard Bop genre, one of my favorite jazz periods. And the Hammond B3 is one of my favorite two instruments. I was shopping in the new record store (two doors from R&W) last month with my nephew and I found the album which he knew so I bought it.”

  80. 2024.06.27 F – Orlando Consort: The Rose, The Lily & The Whortleberry: Medieval Gardens (2005) — weirdly listenable. I do not have the context to even be able to make an observation about it though. I google what a whortleberry is and was helpfully told it is a bilberry.
  81. 2024.06.25 W – MJ Lenderman: Boat Songs (Apr 2022)
  82. 2024.06.25 W – MJ Lenderman: Ghost of Your Guitar Solo (Mar 2021) – I should not have ignored mentioned of MJL. AlexG-core.
  83. 2024.06.25 W – Verraco: Breathe... Godspeed EP (Jun 2024) — weird but listenable electronic music.
  84. 2024.06.25 W – Zsela: Big For You (Jun 2024) — very sweet fresh sounding pop.
  85. 2024.06.23 Su – Sufjan Stevens: Seven Swans (Mar 2004) — think there was a re-issue so listened. He’s been doing the big indie rock pop folk big 11 o’clock number for 20 years! (video; video)
  86. 2024.06.23 Su – King Krule: EP, SHHHHHH! (Jun 2024) — Got some Mac vibes. 11 kruly minutes of krule.
  87. 2024.06.20 R – Paul McCartney / Wings: One Hand Clapping (1974/2004) — “One Hand Clapping is a live studio album by the British–American rock band Paul McCartney and Wings, released on 14 June 2024, nearly fifty years after it was recorded.” Cool!

  89. 2024.06.09 Su – Charli XCX: Brat (Jun 2024) — Is reflective Charli why I love Charli? Maybe not but still loved the album.
  90. 2024.06.08 S – Television: The Blow-Up live album – Strange live album Tweedy pushed in his book World Within A Song. Would not say any of it immediately approached me on easy terms but lots of the longer songs did grow on my and put me in a good funk vortex.
  91. 2024.06.06 R – Cyndi Lauper: She’s So Unusual (Oct 1983) — Listened to this cus Pfork flagged as a classic album review. Learned from my mom she is on tour this summer. The PR media machine gears turn turn turn! Still an absolute classic.
  92. 2024.06.05 W – Trent Reznor: Challengers (Apr 2024) — Fun and good work music but love how Reznor loves to work in Benjamin Britten type choirs into his soundtracks.
  93. 2024.06.05 W – Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No 4 — “The Italian”; mentioned in some show noes as Tchaikovsky being a fan of or something.
  94. 2024.06.04 T – Liquid Mike: Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot (Feb 2024) — “A tight 25 min from Marquette Michigan”. Does this have anything to do with Anatomy of a Murder? No. Does Marquette Michigan remind me of AoaM? Yes.
  95. 2024.06.03 M – Dehd: Water (May 2029) — IT ALL ROCKS.
  96. 2024.06.02 Su – Keith Jarrett: Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne (1973) — Steve Reich-y jazz? Way over my skis but loved it. Reminded me of this all-time favorite grunting master class.
  97. 2024.06.01 S – Bach: Art of the Fugue [The Canadian Brass] — all about that bass/Bach/brass. A quick youtube shows me these guys are a Tiny Desk level known entity (link to video).

  99. 2024.06.01 S – Modest Mouse: Building Nothing Out of Something (1999) – This compilation album… stands together.
  100. 2024.05.31 F – CSO: Manfred Honeck conducts 1) Montgomery Procession [World Premiere, CSO Commission] w/ Cynthia Yeh and Bruckner, Symphony No. 7. “I often listen to his Ninth Symphony,” I chimed in. Another pretty meaningless statement. “Yes, that’s truly lovely music,” the monkey said.
  101. 2024.05.31 F – Vince Staples: Dark Times (May 2024)
  102. 2024.05.30 R – Wings: Back to the Egg (May 1979)
  103. 2024.05.29 W – Guster: Ganging Up on the Sun (Jun 2006)
  104. 2024.05.28 T – Built to Spill: Keep It Like a Secret (Feb 1999) — I don’t “get” B2S but man oh man does this whole album work for me! Like a messy pop lego masterpiece put together in a well worn play room.
  105. 2024.05.27 M – Guster: Ooh La La (May 2024) — Me need mo guster pls. Full disclosure that Guster only got on my radar from this Ratboys’ session.
  106. 2024.05.24 S – Young Jesus: Welcome to Conceptual Beach (Aug 2020) — Can’t believe I thought this singer was a one hit wonder from this: (un)knowing
  107. 2024.05.24 S – Young Jesus: The Fool (May 2024) – AAAAAHHHH. Sooo good. TWO BROTHERS: True love is a little bit like this album.
  108. 2024.05.23 R – Mk.gee: Two Star & the Dream Police (Feb 2024) – Listened to this cus I saved a single awhile ago that got shuffled in front of me and saw someone else call out the band in good way. Thought it was total rip off of Djion then realized they are actually just boys (music video of them being boys).
  109. 2024.05.23 R – Sigur Rós: Ágætis byrjun (Jun 1999) — forgot how super sweet this sound is.
  110. 2024.05.23 R – The Mystics: Presenting The Mystics (1959) — Presenting my review of The Mystics’ Presenting The Mystics: Pretty frickin good/mystical.
  111. 2024.05.22 W – Tidiane Thiam: Africa Yontii (May 2024) – Ugh, that first song made me feel like someone was putting a plunger to my chest in the best was possible. “I don’t engage in politics but I can still make a choice!” Pulaar music should be more popular populaar hehe. “in general all my titles are in Pulaar. My mother’s side of the family is Pulaar so I grew up always speaking it around the house. To add something that might interest you – have you ever wondered why I don’t sing? What I would be singing I prefer to play with my guitar And as I was saying earlier – We don’t hear music we feel it! And my music goes straight to the heart, soul and spirit (a MOVING music).
  112. 2024.05.22 W – Crumb: Amama (May 2024) — A little worried this sounds like an insult but it hit me like best holding/elevator music with a dream adventure waiting on the other side.
  113. 2024.05.21 T – Judy Garland, Judy At Carnegie Hall (1962). Judy Garland remains a cinematic, musical, and historical blindspot for me (except for trolly song; I love trolley song and trolley song loves me). “It was recorded on the night of Sunday April 23, 1961.” Can’t really imagine many better ways to spend a Sunday evening than going nuts for Judy with thousands of other Judy heads. You can just feel the madness in the hall. Sort of funny cus it is not 100% different (just 98%) different than the Sunday evening Freddie Gibbs 10 year anniversary performance of Piñata which was not where I planned to be 24 hours earlier.
  114. 2024.05.20 M – Denzel Curry: Melt My Eyez See Your Future (The Extended Edition) (Mar 2022) — love when a friend shows you an album they love so much and insist you listen to the correct version so pass along detail UI instructions to find the right version in $SPOT. Walkin makes me want to melty bounce all around the neighborhood on a warm day.
  115. 2024.05.18 S – Jessica Pratt: Here in the Pitch (May 2024)
  116. 2024.05.18 S – Béla Fleck and Chick Corea: Remembrance (May 2024) — I happened to catch end of Terry Zwigoff’s 1985 Louie Bluie on Criterion 24/7 about Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong he sort of reminded me of these guys.
  117. 2024.05.17 F – A. G. Cook: Britpop (May 2024) — You gon’ jump if Alexander Guy made it!
  118. 2024.05.16 R – Strawinsky: Pulcinella-Suite ∙ hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ François Leleux (youtube)
  119. 2024.05.16 R – Freddie Gibbs & Madlib: Piñata (Mar 2014) — “They was just kids playing in the dope. They was just playin’ in the dope. It was little four-year-old kids hitting dope in piñatas. I don’t know. It was a crazy ass dream. So, I just called that shit Cocaine Piñata.” plus the MJ Gary, IN story. What do you call a group of zebras? A dazzle!
  120. 2024.05.15 W – MOZART, Violin Concerto No.2 – Julia Fischer
  121. 2024.05.15 W – Jimmy Eat World, Bleed American (Jul 2001) — If I pass at a young age carry me out of the church with this playing. Lots of pop.
  122. 2024.05.14 T – Dehd, Poetry (May 2024) — Def one of the bands in the last few years where their new music gets me excited. Hope this love can take me higher (Hold my head, hurt me harder)!!
  123. 2024.05.13 M – Mdou Moctar: Funeral for Justice (May 2024)
  124. 2024.05.12 Su – Kacy Hill: Bug (May 2024) — Not sure how this happened but Kacy Hill all of a sudden became on of my favorite musicians. Fun album.
  125. 2024.05.09 R – Beirut Beats: Beirut Beats 01 (May 2024) — “The result synthesises the emotional experience of living the Lebanese capital, where the traditional Middle Eastern and North African rhythms are stylized to address the cutting-edge demands of contemporary and future Club Culture.” The demands are too high too high for me! Sort of reminded me of Oceans Twelve Laser Dance.
  126. 2024.05.09 R – Kamasi Washington: Fearless Movement (May 2024) — Dream party dinner party adventure party. (official visual)
  127. 2024.05.08 W – Derek Gripper: One Night on Earth: Music From the Strings of Mali (2012) — from work searchable conversation system. Sometimes work delivers the goods. No Toumani Diabaté (Don’t think he’s trying to be Toumani Diabaté).
  128. 2024.05.07 T – Oisin Leech: Cold Sea (Mar 2024) — $SPOT algo delivered a rare sonic jewel for me in suggesting this song (One Hill Further – Sadness does run like a fever. People forget that!)) which led to me listening to this album. Fan! Reminded me of Nick Drake. Reminded my sister of Coldplay.
  129. 2024.05.07 T – Grandaddy: Blu Wav (Feb 2024) — sort of winged it listening to this and loved it. What more can you ask of It. This song inspired an album. Brutal! You’re going to be fine and I’m going to hell, fo sho. Off to the cabin in my mind!

  134. Future
  135. Taylor
  136. 2024.04.22 M – Shabaka: Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace (Apr 2024) — sometimes an album cover and titles catches your eye so you listen to it than you see Laraaji featured on it and you have tickets to see him in five days so you feel like you are in good hands even though this is very little big, loud, shiny horn to be found amongst these spirit songs. (Break link in case of emergency need for blsh [big loud shiny horn]).
  137. 2024.04.21 Su – Cloud Nothings: Final Summer (Apr 2024) — Does this album do anything new or intersting? I think so but also some bands get a permanent place in your heart cus of albums that came out in high school.
  138. 2024.04.18 R – Prokofjew: 5. Sinfonie ∙ hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Aziz Shokhakimov
  139. 2024.04.18 R – CSO: Conductor Tugan Sokhiev — 1) Panufnik – Heroic Overture; Chopin, Piano Concerto No. 1 (Yulianna Avdeeva); 3) Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 1 (Winter Dreams) — CSO be fun by yourself. CSO be more fun with cousins in from out of town. We chuckled at piano for Chopin being raised from the depths of hell where bad note players are also sent. Chopin felt boring to me but then you remember…
  140. 2024.04.17 W -Anoushka Shankar – Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn EP (Apr 2024) – Not that it matters but… only 24 minutes! Liked this a lot more than I thought I might. Whatever the melody was here reminded me of a more restrained delicate this.
  141. 2024.04.17 W – أحمد [Ahmed]: Wood Blues – Liked the album cover so went to look for album. Saw on $SPOT there was only one song so figured album hadn’t been released yet. Then realized it was a 58 minute song. Lots of what ever parts but when it really beeped and booped it truly bopped. Last ten minutes felt electric. (Here is 4 minute original these guys played for an hour.)
  142. 2024.04.17 – Cindy Lee – Diamond Jubilee (2024) Full Album HQ – Ugh erm uhm… two hours of jams and ditties. Can’t say it all drew me in but enough did that I wished I had found it on $SPOT so I could have saved some of them.

  144. 2024.04.16 T – Yo-Yo Ma: Songs from the Arc of Life (2015) — worth it alone for this song.

  149. 2024.04.10 W – Khruangbin: A LA SALA (Apr 2024) – I am glad I have gotten over my “they are so derivative of so much other better music” phase with this band. Another groover! Anti-zapped medicine. Khruangbin is a does it for most (all?) vibes band.

  166. 2024.04.03 W – Orchestra Baobab: Pirate’s Choice (1982)
  167. 2024.04.03 W – Peter Gregson, Quartets: One – Four (2022) — Review about Yonder Blue from 2019: This mix of man and the natural world is present not just in the stage design, but also in the music and dancing. Composer Peter Gregson’s score “Quartets: Two” is an absolute star of “Yonder Blue,” written for strings and synthesizer and released in 2017. Played by the Chicago Philharmonic, Maestro Scott Speck conducted a fraction of the orchestra’s violin, viola and cello sections over what I assume is a recorded track of vintage synthesizers. The piece, in four sections, shares minimalistic qualities with more familiar composers like Philip Glass, but Gregson dares to resolve it, landing on major chords often, and providing a sweeping, cinematic, and satisfying landscape for McNicol’s rangy choreography.

  138. 2023.02.05 Su – Paul Simon, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon [1973] – Listened to because of the connection to Muscle Shoals, AL and this mentioned in Miracle and Wonder. Also has American Tune on it: My favorite example is, do you remember the song, Come and Take Me to the Mardi Gras by him. They go to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, which is the famous R&B recording studio to record that song. He brings Jeter with him. He ships up from New Orleans, a brass band, The Onward Marching Band from New Orleans. And the song itself is a calypso tune. So we have a. White Jewish guy from Queens, New York, teams up with a gospel preacher from Harlem with a New Orleans brass band to go to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to do a calypso song when he describes how all those pieces come together.

  142. 2023.01.25 W – Fela Kuti: Underground System (1992) – Fela often cited an “underground spiritual game” as a weapon with which to fight oppressive regimes and reactionary ideas. He used “underground system” to describe its evil opposite – the network of secret conclaves through which military and political elites conspired together to silence emergent leaders who threatened the status quo. Fela wrote the first draft of the rocket-fuelled title track as a tribute to Burkina Faso’s revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara. The two men knew and liked each other: Sankara admired Fela’s music as much as Fela admired Sankara’s espousal of African values and commitment to radical social change. There was evidence that the Nigerian regime had been involved in Sankara’s 1987 assassination: the underground system had been at work.

  7. 2022.12.04 Su – Richard Dawson: The Ruby Cord (Nov 2022) – “The Hermit” was a bit confusing but like album once it got to “Museum” (which for some reason brought to mind one of the themes from Elf) and then like “The Tip of an Arrow” and really liked “Horse and Rider.” I listened to this was driving across the Colorado plain towards Denver during sunset and saw this big freight train approach from distance then past like a Dune sandworm and the music felt appropriate. Disclaimer that I really did not dial in on the lyrics. Maybe I need to revisit.
  8. 2022.12.03 S – Ethel Cain: Preacher’s Daughter (May 2022): Finally listened to Preacher’s Daughter at recommendation of friend on drive to Des Moines. 55. 2022.06.30 R – Gum Boots: Accordion Jive Hits Vol II – youtube comment from Heidi Berg, The Band name is “Gum Boots”. The Records are on GoGo Records. They have been scrubbed from the Earth by a certain multi-millionaire. Gum Boots – the band (which included ‘boyoyo boys” and others other others! ) put out many records. I have orig 3. They were made in 1980 and 1981. Probably a lot of other years too. / This is an amazingly long collection of their “Jive Accordion Hits” __ * But it does not contain the ultimately Scrubbed from the Planet Though it’s very interesting to hear the same players w/their joyful gorgeous sound on so many like-tracks. Tragic that the Rich are able to SQUASH the POOR. And then get heralded for being generous somehow… The cassettes always had full credits, song titles, producer, record company, and Art work pics on cover – Nonsense that it was ever a “Mystery”! It was not a Mystery — but NOW it’s a mystery 😉 It’s been Squashed. Thanks for this posting & hello back at you!

  116. 2022.01.24 M – Maurice Ravel, La valse, M. 72 · Basque National Orchestra · Robert Trevino
    • Alex RossLet the Basques’ rip-roaring rendition of Ravel’s “La Valse” stand in for the rest. It explodes with characterful touches: sinister noodling of bass clarinet, slashing cross-rhythms, kitschy swoops of portamento, concussive thuds on the bass drum. At the same time, Trevino maintains irresistible momentum, absorbing each detail into the general crescendo. “La Valse” was composed in the wake of the First World War, and conductors often make a point of enacting a brutal stampede toward catastrophe. Trevino doesn’t skimp on the menace, but he and his musicians keep swinging to the end, dancing into darkness.

    • “You enjoy Bruckner?”
    • “Yes. His Seventh Symphony. I always find the third movement particularly uplifting.”
    • “I often listen to his Ninth Symphony,” I chimed in. Another pretty meaningless statement.
